How much does a Defender chassis swap cost ?

How much does a chassis swap cost ?

It’s really difficult to give a guide figure for a Land Rover Defender chassis swap however there are some basic costs pretty much everything starts off with then the rest will be based on condition of the vehicle and the finish the client wants. Some want a bells and whistles full restoration and others a functional chassis swap. This guide is for a Land Rover Defender Chassis swap

We use either Marslands or Richards Chassis as a full chassis supplier. We only give a direct swap fee based on their chassis products supplied by us.

The current price for a Defender chassis is £ 1890 plus delivery exc VAT for a 90 TD5 to give an idea at time of writing August 2019

So for a ‘normal’ chassis swap which involves removing a good condition body from the chassis, axles removed as a complete unit with arms, replacing brake pipes, we charge the set labour fee of £1295 exc for the Land Rover Defender 90 TD5

We do not remove the arms from the axles, strip a body down, remove doors, split down axles or suspension as part of this service. Engine and gearbox is transferred as one unit complete. There are images on our Facebook site which give more of an idea of how it’s done. Do ask if you want more details can send those to you

So what should I budget ?

A guide line we always say to allow for on a Defender 90 in overall good condition is £5000. If your vehicle is not in good condition and needs other repairs or parts ask. We can give you an idea of the additional costs

This is a workshop list of what we do when we are doing a chassis swap, as you can see axles are moved as one, likewise engine and transmission.

Works not covered will be charged at £45/hour and parts at cost.

The best way to go through what you need and indeed what you want is a face to face consultation with the vehicle on the lift. If this isn’t possible a good set of images will give more of an idea than nothing

How do we pay ? How long does it take

Payments are made for a standard chassis swap as follows

Day 1 of confirming your booking we order your chassis and you pay for it. Price will depend on what make, model and how quickly you’d like it. We can provide most Land Rover Chassis items within 48 hours but the supplier does charge a premium for this.

Booking in. As soon as we have a delivery date for your chassis we will get you booked in.

Day 2. We aim to let you know if any main additional parts are needed by the end of day 2

Completion date 7-10 days we aim to have the vehicle chassis swap completed within 7-10 days, the barrier in this can be parts required being out of stock etc. If you require over

What if I want more parts fitted or a restoration?

If you’re looking for additional parts fitted for example to replace suspension, repair doors, repair a bulkhead etc then this is charged hourly. We can discuss if a restoration would be better suited. A restoration is a piece by piece process where we remove the body a panel at a time, stripping down the car piece by piece restoring, replacing or repairing as required. During this process we strip down axles, brakes, suspension, doors, wings, bulkhead and more. Average hours in a chassis swap are 35-40 and in a restoration is 300-400. When main panels are in good order you’re usually looking a budget of £16000-20000 plus paintwork. We don’t paint in house but can recommend some excellent body shops locally.
